James Searle

It's possible that this was James John Searle 7 July 1855 – 8 June 1945. He's also referred to as 'R. Searle' in the original reports. The name 'Searle' isn't mentioned with the word 'bicycle' in newspaper accounts, subsequent to ATHLETIC SPORTS. - San Francisco Chronicle, 23 Feb 1879, but apparently J. J. Searle did compete in other running and swimming events.
