WILL COMPETE IN HUNDRED-MILE MOTOR PACED RACE - San Jose Mercury-news, 14 May 1903
In the first relay Beuck of the local wheelmen held his own with West, the crack Bay City man. He passed the packet safely to Murphy, who held his own against his opponents. He and Carlson of the New Centuries crossed the tape ahead of the other three riders. Carlson led by a few feet, but this had been previously arranged between Murphy and Berryessa, the third rider for the Garden City Wheelmen. Berryessa was pitted against Schou of the New Centuries, who was predicted to take the lead for his team. He was not successful, however, for Berryessa can sprint a little and he gave a spurt and passed the New Century man and the clever Garden City rider was soon out of sight. He gained just a minute on his opponents and during the remainder of the race the Garden City Wheelmen rode by themselves.
