J. BERRYESSA
Who took the first lead of the race.

...

Berryessa Gets a Lead.

In the first relay Beuck of the local wheelmen held his own with West, the crack Bay City man. He passed the packet safely to Murphy, who held his own against his opponents. He and Carlson of the New Centuries crossed the tape ahead of the other three riders. Carlson led by a few feet, but this had been previously arranged between Murphy and Berryessa, the third rider for the Garden City Wheelmen. Berryessa was pitted against Schou of the New Centuries, who was predicted to take the lead for his team. He was not successful, however, for Berryessa can sprint a little and he gave a spurt and passed the New Century man and the clever Garden City rider was soon out of sight. He gained just a minute on his opponents and during the remainder of the race the Garden City Wheelmen rode by themselves.

SAN JOSE BOYS OUTSPEED RENO MEN. - San Jose Mercury-news, 11 September 1904

Interest in bicycling has taken a decided revival in local circles since the announcement that Elsentraut would go after the record of one hour flat which is held by John Berryessa, and a number of surprising features have developed. Most important among these is the announcement made by Berryessa yesterday that in case Eisentraut sets a new mark next Sunday he will start training immediately in an effort to regain his lost laurels.
